CAN I KICK IT? / feat Black Panther / Recap
One of our goals with our first screening, last Tues, was to set a tone and a vibe for this year’s series and certainly give anyone new to CAN I KICK IT? an understanding of how we watch, which is different from the norm.  We, essentially, want to give people a wholly new movie-going experience and we hope that its an experience that they feel is theirs, regardless if they’ve seen the movie or not, but to also enjoy sharing that experience with others via social media or inviting/bringing friends and family.

We hope we’re able to establish all of the above with our screening of Black Panther.

CAN I KICK IT? / feat Deadpool / 6.18.19

And for the third film of our DowntownDC Summer Flicks CAN I KICK IT? outdoor series we present Deadpool.

Some might consider Deadpool the step-child of the Marvel cinematic universe, considering it took Ryan Reynolds 11 years and 47 rejection letters to make, however, all of the pain that he and, ironically, the character have gone through have seemingly paid off as both Deadpool 1 and 2 are hugely popular and have produced quite well at the box office.

THIS FILM IS RATED R. This film contains strong language and may not be suitable for younger audiences.

CAN I KICK IT? / feat The Warriors at The Kennedy Center / Recap

Our CAN I KICK IT? event at The Kennedy Center is, hands down, one of our biggest events to date.  The outdoors series at Freedom Plaza that we’ve done with the Downtown DC BID also shares that space.  And as cliche as it sounds, its hard to put into words the feeling that we got and how amazing the experience was the day of when 2-Tone dropped the needle and the movie started.

Thank you to Simone Eccleston for giving us a shot, props to Maishah and Ja’Mon for holding down the merch table and for welcoming our attendees, props to RBI and Roddy who, along with 2-Tone, killed that DJ frenzy, salute to everyone who helped spread the word, and, of course, thank you to everyone who attended and helped us sell out the Terrace Theater.  Your support is greatly appreciated.  For the full recap click here.

Sweet Nancy from Shaolin – Media-Only / Recap
A few months ago we decided to conduct a media-only listening session for our Sweet Nancy from Shaolin album, with goals of creating a platform for 2-Tone to wax-poetic about the making of the project while at the same time giving attendees a true (hip-hop) heads experience.

We brought in notable music journalist Marcus K Dowling (Complex, Pitchfork, VICE) who expertly led the conversation between he and 2-Tone allowing 2-Tone to delve deep into the stories and various nuances of the making of specific tracks which culminated into the making of our best SHAOLIN JAZZ album to date.

Thanks to Marcus K Dowling for setting the conversation and tone, props to Chuck Levin’s for allowing us to use their studio for the session – the sound design helped to punctuate the experience, much appreciated to Calabash Tea & TonicStella’s PopKernBjorn’s BakesHero Heads Clothing, and Red Bullfor providing beverages, bites, and apparel to fuel the vibe, and, of course, big shouts to everyone who attended.

Summer Flicks x CAN I KICK IT? / feat The Golden Child / Recap

Our last Summer Flicks x CAN I KICK IT? screening featuring The Golden Child, despite it being cut short due to rain, was more than memorable.  The story starts with this event being (or supposed to at least) a make-up for our screening of the same movie, which also got rained out on its original date!  Fortunately we were able to get in some of the movie for the 200+ of you who attended before the heavy wind and rain came thru.

Thanks again to the DowntownDC BID for bringing us back for another series, props to Darcio Lira Jiu Jitsu for the demo, shouts to our cadre of media partners who helped spread the word about this year’s festivities, and special thanks to everyone who attended.
